Instrument Pilot Ground School Syllabus for Instructors and Students
Copyright 2024/Updated to 2025
This FREE (printable) syllabus is primarily intended as a guide to help flight and ground instructors teach a live, nine-week instrument ground school. It’s easy to use and laid out in a way that you can prepare your class of aspiring instrument students for the instrument (airplane) knowledge exam in nine weeks. If you are an instrument student studying for the exam on your own, this syllabus also benefits you. You can use it to guide your study over a nine-week period to prepare for the instrument airplane knowledge exam. Here’s how to get started.
As an instructor, you’ll need images to help you teach class. I recommend you purchase my Slide Images for Instrument Pilot Ground School. These are images from my Rod Machado’s Instrument Pilot’s Handbook and you are welcome to use them in a live (in person) ground school or during one-on-one teaching of students. These images may not be used to teach any type of online or recorded ground school or online eLearning course. The images are in picture (JPG) form and in PowerPoint format for each chapter in the book. If you’ve never taught ground school before, you can use the handbook to develop and guide your presentation while showing the appropriate slides during class. Of course, you can modify this approach as you like, but teaching ground school is quite straightforward since I include test questions for each lesson and training stage in this syllabus.
As a final note, if you have not taught a live ground school in a while and are worried about your IFR technical knowledge, here’s my recommendation: Rod Machado’s 50-Hour Instrument eGround School. This eCourse is the most comprehensive aviation eLearning program available today. It not only contains all the technical knowledge you’ll need to teach IFR ground school but also provides a guide on how to teach the material. Studying how I teach this subject might make it easier for you to do the same. Check out the eLearning demo course at: IFR eLearning Demo Course.
